Felicifia Is No Longer Accepting New Users

Postby peterhurford on 2014-10-03T23:17:00

With the new EA forum, the large decline in Felicifia usage, Brian Tomasik and I have decided to shut down Felicifia for new users starting now. New users were overwhelmingly likely to be spambots anyway.

All content on Felicifia will continue to be retained indefinitely. And the board will still work for all current users.

We typically got spam every few days that Peter had to delete, so I figured this would save him time. I think we've only gotten one new substantial contributor in about a year (namely, Darklight). If anyone would like to revive Felicifia for some reason, feel free to contact Peter or me at the email addresses you'll find by Googling/Binging our names. That said, it's plausible most contributions here can just as well go on the new EA forum.

Hm, I would like to reopen this at some stage. I don't feel like the EA forum serves exactly the same niche, but I sympathise about spambots (and can't criticise when I've had so little time to help with them recently) :\

Has anyone looked at upgrading the software to a newer version of phpBB? This one is hopelessly out of date, so perhaps that's why so many are getting through?

I don't think there's sufficient user demand to justify re-opening Felicifia at this point. I'd be happy to hand over the reigns of Felicifia to you, though, if you'd like to try to revive it.

We're now experimenting with reopening the forum again.

Yay for being called a substantial contributor! I feel honoured, given I sometimes feel like my contributions aren't particularly substantial... XD

While I do think that keeping the forums open is a good idea just in case at some point in the future the public at large becomes interested in Utilitarianism again, I'm curious what the reasoning behind reopening it now is?

We re-opened to allow Sasha to experiment with regrowing the forum. We're now closing again until Sasha has more time to devote to this.

If we think the EA forum fulfills the same role that Felicifia used to, it may be a good idea to put a link to the EA forum on the front page.

Good idea, Michael. Where on the front page were you thinking?
