Hello!

Postby Copacetivist on 2010-04-17T09:18:00

Hi, my name's Gabe, I'm a college student from Canada with a casual interest in Philosophy. Since I've never actually taken any classes in Philosophy my knowledge of ethics is fairly limited, but I'm still fairly certain that I subscribe to Consequentialism, particularly Preference Utilitarianism. That's because Consequentialism is the only secular ethical system I've read about that I could really consider value-free. I'm joining this forum because I find the ethical considerations of adopting a Consequentialist worldview are so important and so difficult that I'd have to hear other opinions to get through them.

Hi Copacetivist, welcome aboard the good ship Felicifia. Quite a few people here are non-philosophers, and like it that way. I think a few of us relate utilitarianism to philosophy as we would atheism to theology :P

What classes do you take?
"These were my only good shoes."
"You ought to have put on an old pair, if you wished to go a-diving," said Professor Graham, who had not studied moral philosophy in vain.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! Arepo, you wondered what classes I was taking; I've decided to try for a double major in History and English, but since I'm only just finishing my first year Monday that's still an open question.
