Common Misconceptions of Consequentialism

Postby DanielLC on 2010-09-25T02:46:00

I thought of making this thread after Arepo mentioned people think Consequentialists have to get emotionally involved.

Some people think that Consequentialists need to worry about every single person harmed, and everything you could have done to help them. This is false. You only need to help them. You should only worry if that makes you better at helping people.

Some people think Consequentialism would have us punish everyone who isn't one. This is false. You should judge people based on the consequences of you judging them. Not on their actions, intents, or anything else about them.

Anything else?

Nice thread idea. Maybe we should sticky it? Let's see how it goes, I guess. One of my bugbears:

Consequentialists think good can outweigh harm, therefore if a situation helps more people than it harms (eg gang rape, killing redheads etc), consequentialists should support it.

(this is not only wrong in theory but also demonstrable in practice - historically, utilitarians and proto-utilitarians right back to Epicurus have a fantastic track record on supporting oppressed minorities)

"You ought to have put on an old pair, if you wished to go a-diving," said Professor Graham, who had not studied moral philosophy in vain.
