Curious about this metaethics piece. What's the thrust? I take it you're an academic?

I'm not an academic - I just wanted to write out some things I have been thinking about what kind of thing utilitarianism is to me, and what it means to say it is a system of ethics. Some of the ideas I came up with in this regard helped me overcome some doubts I had about utilitarianism. I thought this would be a good place to post those ideas for feedback, discussion and/or debate
