Hello!

Postby richard on 2011-09-16T09:46:00

Hi folks,

I'm Richard, currently studying Human Sciences at Oxford University. I came across giving what we can about a year ago and I'm now helping to set up the high impact careers network. It seems that I'm fast developing a group of utilitarian friends so I thought it was high time I joined felicifia.

I'm hoping to become a professional donor, probably in programming, although I might carry on on the influencer route if high impact careers takes off. I'm pretty interested in how to live the good life overall, and I'm more inclined towards making utilitarianism practically doable than arguing theoretically. I'm pretty interested in building the utilitarian community so that we're more effective as a group than we are apart.

Welcome Richard! What a great introduction. I'm always keen to hear how High Impact Careers is developing. It's such an important project in terms of world happiness. You may have some common ground with Arepo in considering programming as a possible career choice.

It seems like Oxford is the world capital of utilitarianism. There are utilitarians from all over the world at Felicifia. It's kind-of a shame utilitarians are so geographically dispersed. We aren't all located in some utilitarian city-state! But I guess that fact is just all the more reason to develop the online community.

Hey Richard :)

We've already met, Ryan, and brainstormed a few thoughts about how the Felicifia community might be able to help HIC develop. In particular, Richard pointed out the possibility of crowdsourcing to get a page/pages up on WikiFelicifia about the pros/cons of various HI career choices.
"These were my only good shoes."
"You ought to have put on an old pair, if you wished to go a-diving," said Professor Graham, who had not studied moral philosophy in vain.

Hi Richard, welcome to Felicifia - it's Tom Ash here :)

Crowdsourcing information about particular careers sounds a good idea, though it'd probably work best if the core HIC team write some initial pages to get the crowd started...

I actually chose Oxford over Cambridge on the basis of a table of weighted pro's and con's, but my gut was saying Oxford all along...must be my utilitarian radar :P
