How did you find Felicifia?

Postby Brian Tomasik on 2012-01-01T11:21:00

LessWrong has an interesting forum where people describe how they found that site. I would be curious to hear the same for Felicifia.

In my case, a friend pointed me to Seth Baum's old blog in fall 2006. I chatted with Seth by email and in person. Shortly after, Seth founded the Old Felicifia, and I joined there.

I found it by googling "utilitarianism forum".

Found via Alan's website. I'm not entirely sure how I found that though...

I think it was that way too for me. I've tried "deontology forum" also, but no luck.

I can't remember how I found Seth Baum's original Felicifia, it's too long ago!

Interesting that 3 out of 6 of us found Felicifia through Googling for a utilitarian forum. Usually I imagine that these sorts of thing spread mainly through friends or shared blogs, but I guess that's not the case here.

Ditto.

Linked via the xkcd forums.

It was the thread "What makes a life good?"

I was recruited by Arepo! He'd spotted me advocating utilitarianism in some old threads at iidb.org (the Internet Infidels Discussion Board - once an incredibly lively, and pretty good, forum, though now dead and splintered).

It seems that this information could be gathered more efficiently using (i) a poll at the top of the post and (ii) a survey that all people take when they register usernames for the site. I found this (or maybe the old version) a long time ago (maybe 2007?) by googling "utilitarian community." I didn't post until a couple of years ago, though.

Good suggestion, utilitymonster. I guess several websites do have a "How did you find us?" question.

I believe I was told about it by either Toby Ord or Seth Baum himself.

I can't remember.
It was probably by googling utilitarian forums.

I was recruited by a Facebook friend. Like Brian, I assumed most here were recruited and am surprised by how many found the site through Google.
