Felicifia backups

Postby Brian Tomasik on 2012-02-27T04:52:00

I checked Internet Archive for Felicifia and saw that it seems to have relatively poor coverage for the site. There were only 6 backups in 2011, and the last was on July 26. There have been no backups in 2012.

Are there any ways to improve the backing up of Felicifia? Apart from Internet Archive, WebCite allows for backing up any custom url you want, but it's a page-by-page process, and I don't think it's intended for a whole site like this.

If felicifia.org shuts down at some point -- I'm not suggesting that it will soon but just preparing for that eventuality :) -- will we at least have a backup copy of the files? Perhaps we could then upload them to another website for posterity.

Might be worth asking James Evans about this. He does a lot of the background maintenance for the site.
"These were my only good shoes."
"You ought to have put on an old pair, if you wished to go a-diving," said Professor Graham, who had not studied moral philosophy in vain.

The best way to backup the site is to grab a copy of the SQL database. You can use the phpmyadmin interface here:
https://www.knightsbridge.net/phpmyadmin/
If someone emails me I can send the DB password or you can FTP it directly from the config file in the WP directory.
The SQL DB is normally backed up in a weekly backup (and that backup is itself copied to an offsite location). But it is safest to make another backup as well so I'd recommend a manual export every so often via phpmyadmin.

Sorry I haven't done so yet. Thanks for the reminder. Will do so again shortly. Feel free to message me here or elsewhere in a week or two to make sure I do.

edit: I have now made FTP and MYSQL backups of the forum and wiki.
