'Like' button for Felicifia

Postby Brian Tomasik on 2012-06-25T18:53:00

I added a Facebook Like button to my website a few months ago, and it has brought in a significant amount of traffic. As of now 118 people have Liked it. 80,000 Hours has 345 Likes.

Does anyone know if it's possible to add a Like button for Felicifia?

The process seems non-trivial based on what I could find online. Apparently there's a mod that can add a Like button to each forum page, but it looks tricky to install mods. It might be possible to add the button to the main site without a mod, but this still involves messing with an FTP client, which I don't know how to do for this forum.

I'll put this on the long-term todo list unless someone else has more experience with it.

Good idea - might be worth contacting James Evans? He knows more about the technical aspects of the forum than anyone active on it...

Great idea Brian! I just installed the mod which uses the Facebook API. I had to create a Facebook App with my FB account. It's currently running within the 2 widely used themes (which was the main trick to the install).

You are a hero, James! I definitely liked this discussion.

BTW, Felicifia seems to be running slowly at the moment. Hopefully this is a transient issue and doesn't relate to the Like-button installation?

Thanks Brian! There are backups done over the weekends in the early AM so sometimes that will slow things down during those times. I think that was why the site wasn't running at full speed.

I don't see a like button currently, is it up?

I have some experience in web-design including adding like buttons. This is for html though, I don't know much about php which I'm assuming the forum runs on, but I'm sure it'd be fairly easy.

http://developers.facebook.com/docs/ref ... gins/like/

I'd recommend some one set up a Felicifia Facebook page, create a like button on that page and then embed the same like link here in the forum. That way any one on Facebook or on the forum who likes the page will like the same page. It helps with consistency so you don't have two different pages. You can just have one like for the forum but I find in the long run having a Facebook pages (not just a Facebook like button) for sites adds traffic and interest for the site. Just add a description and a link to the forum on the Facebook page.

This way you can also inform people of updates into their newsfeed unless they block that, which again can create traffic/interest when dealing with certain topics/updates (for example a meat up, just don't over spam people with worthless junk).

Thanks, Nap!

The Like button isn't for all of Felicifia; it exists at the top left of each individual forum page, so that you can Like particular discussions.

There's also a Share button at the bottom of the main page, but I think you're right that it doesn't correspond to an entity on Facebook. (I've Liked Felicifia from the main page, but I don't see the forum in my list of Likes on my Facebook profile.)

It might be some work to figure out how to add a Like button for the Felicifia entity, so I suggest we contact James again and see if he has ideas?

I don't see a Iike button for individual posts page or for the over all forum in the top left, of anywhere for that matter. Maybe I'm just blind, can I get a screen shot of what its supposed to look like?

For what it's worth, I'm not seeing it anywhere obvious either.

Is JavaScript turned on? It should show up just under the topic. Or perhaps you are using a different theme? I believe this one is the "nexus style" theme.

Okay ya, its the themes. Prosilver is the default theme and nexus style is the only one where the like button works with it seems. I didn't check all of them but I checked two random ones and neither of those and the default one have the like button.

I'll be sticking with nexus style anyway because I don't like having the avatars on the left.

If you don't know how you change a theme just follow these steps.

1) Go to the User Control Panel.

2) Choose "Board Preferences"

3) Scroll down and they will see "Board style:" they will be able to choose any of the styles installed here.

Perhaps nexus style should be made the default theme?

I also have an avatars-on-right preference.

As far as a Like button for the Felicifia page as a whole, James says it might be possible to piece together, although first we'll need to create a Facebook page for Felicifia. Any volunteers to set that up? :)

What does 'page' mean in this context? Facebook has a lot of quite similar-seeming options - at least two types of group, fan pages, organisational accounts etc...

I'd do it but since I'm new here it didn't seem right. I still can if you want me to though.

Hi all,
I have a Felicifia Facebook page. I don't have time to give it polish at this moment. So if anyone, new or old to Felicifia, would like to contribute to it, before I make it public, please PM me or better, email me and I'll invite you in.

The Like buttons at the top of each forum page have disappeared for me. Actually, when I load a page, I see a box flash in the area where the button should be, and the page continues to leave a blank space for the button. But the button itself doesn't ever appear.

I still have the 'nexus' theme on. Any ideas why the buttons aren't showing up?

I can replicate this problem in IE8 though not in Chrome. Best take it up with James Evans who installed this mod, Brian.

It's working fine on Chrome 21. Thanks, James!

Glad it works! I had to change a variable to use the Facebook application's numeric ID rather than its name. The plugin developer let me know what to do. Hopefully it stays fixed!
