The High Impact Network (THINK) Online Outreach

Effective altruists, not all of whom are geographically located together, benefit from being connected and brought up to date with effective ideas and plans regarding areas of interest to them.

Mark Lee and I want to meet aspiring effective altruists and talk about how their talents and ideas might fit into the greater scheme of organised altruistic effort.

Due to the popularity of the previous meetup group, the new discussion will be divided into two smaller groups that will host simultaneous discussions on:

1. Addressing Global Poverty - how can we best reduce the burden of global poverty?

2. Beyond Global Poverty - what are other highly important causes and how can we address them?

Participants are welcome to suggest up to 3 ways that they are interested in addressing these problems, and then we'll discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches. The agenda is broad so as not to preempt or undermine new suggestions likely to be effective. More targeted follow-up meetings can be later arranged if required.

Mark and I will chair one conversation each. Both will take place through Google Hangouts, at a democratically determined time between the 23rd and 27th.

Please email me ry.duff@gmail.com to be invited in to the discussion. Please do so ahead of time so I don't have to try to invite new people and facilitate the discussion simultaneously. Feel free to include agenda suggestions in the email.

I'd love to be involved, assuming I'm available at those times. I've recently decided that one of the highest impact things I can do right now is get more involved in the EA movement. (That and get a job to earn more money to give, which I've already started. :) )

Is there a reason both conversations need to happen simultaneously? I'd sure like to be involved in both, and would struggle to pick. Perhaps it would be more effective if you took the same topic and split up into multiple conversation "pods" that happened simultaneously?

As for other high impact causes, I think there could be a good conversation about anti-speciesism / nonhuman animal welfare and another good conversation about existential risk reduction.

Anyways, thanks very much for setting this up, and thanks for encouraging people to have more prepared to come into the conversation! I'm glad to see these get off the ground.

Awesome so we email ry.duff@gmail.com ?

I'd like to hear you talk about antispeciesism, wild animal suffering and, if you want to get "out there", whether "the sign" of the current expected future is + or - .

I just realized that ry.duff@gmail.com is very likely your email address. I thought I was emailing someone other than you. That will explain why my email sounds weird.
