All Your Favorite EA Orgs are Recruiting!

Rightly so, in my opinion, the effective altruism movement is expanding, and there are now tons of opportunities to get involved on the ground floor, if you sincerely think that's where your talents can be best served. Keeping in mind the general compellingness of "earning to give" to support these orgs in hiring rather than working for them directly and the effects of replacability, these orgs still need capable people to work their comparative advantage in these opportunities.

So what do we have?

Presumably not including questions about Givewell?

Great. Yesterday I wrote a draft for LessWrong with the announcements from the Centre for Effective Altruism, but I didn't now GiveWell was recruiting, too. I added their job notice and posted it here.

Yeah. Good catch.

Thanks for doing that. I know there already is an announcement about 80K and GWWC by LukeProg, but a little reminder and additional information can't hurt. :)

Wonderful, Peter and Pablo!

The additional job openings on EAA's site are as follows:
New Harvest is seeking a Director.
Humane Research Council is seeking a Research/Communications Coordinator.
FARM is seeking 10 Billion Lives Tour Staff.

See the EAA page itself for the links.

Finally, if anyone is interested in an internship or full-time position next year working on wild-animal suffering, let me know. We may be able to make arrangements. :)

By the way, if I may say so myself: The growth trajectory of EA is friggin' unbelievable! How did we get this far in just a few years?

Back in late 2006, there was no GiveWell, no LessWrong, no 80K. All we had was a blog called Overcoming Bias and a smaller blog called Felicifia. The latter became a forum in 2007 (?). The former became LessWrong in 2008 (?). Giving What We Can came along in 2009 and helped spark the Oxford contingent, leading to 80K, CEA, EAA, etc.

I still remember back in 2006 when I first met Toby Ord, he shared with me a small proposal he had circulated to friends about creating a group of people who would commit to donating to developing-world charities. It was actually Pablo who put me in touch with Toby, so thanks, Pablo! Incidentally, Pablo's website was the first thing I read when I Googled "utilitarianism" back in 2005, and on it I found Peter Singer's essays on animal suffering. Physics knows where I would be without it.

I echo Brian; I'm astounded by the growth, and hope it continues into something powerful and more reputable. We're getting there, and I'm excited to be a college student right at the time things are getting big. I'd sincerely nominate Toby Ord for some sort of Utilitarian Award given to those who have the biggest impact (we need something like that, btw) for basically starting the Effective Altruism movement.

I just applied to be an intern. Other people should consider applying very soon if they want to, the deadline is less than 48 hours away!
