Martial Arts Thread

Postby slideyfoot on 2009-01-20T07:40:00

As I see there hasn't been a thread just on this before (unless I'm really bad at using the site search...), who else is a martial artsy person on here? Why, what style, how long etc.

What are these 'martial' forms of art? Something to do with aggressive painting techniques to generate imagery of the beast within, one assumes?

Also, that fellow in your avatar seems to have fallen over. How careless...

Maybe if he did not have such slidey feet he would not have fallen over?

Fortunately his female friend appears to be helping him up, so not to worry. ;)

I'm still doing the same bits and pieces I always was. Been going to some of those Marital Tai Chi lessons recently.

Cullion's thing? How's that going - something for the long-term, or not really your kind of class?

It's good fun, but I just started going when the guy started running sessions in my gym. I dunno how well I'd motivate myself to head further afield :P

I'm also not too into throws and takedowns, which they do a lot of in their more intense classes.

Yeah, I'm still having trouble getting into that. Before I got made redundant, I was popping along to the uni judo club, so would be nice to get back into it once I manage to pin down a new job. Hardest part I find is relaxing when they throw you, and during randori: keep ending up stiff-arming, even though I know thats stupid and won't help my progress.

On the plus side, they've been doing lots of judo at RGA. :)

Utilitarianism and Judo? No, never.

Stiff arming will get you standing armbarred where I train pretty quick. I'm not one to be able to give advice, (But wait for it...), but I find if I do that I'm also totally limiting my own attacking opportunities as well as telegraphing a lot more easily whatever I'm planning. Relaxing, yeah that's my number one problem as well. I got pulled across the rocks about it last Thursday, but it's not as though it's something I'm conciously doing. If someone tells me to move my foot 2cm to the left I can, this is a lot easier that telling my body to relax as I'm getting yanked into the air and launched. Sort of a bit like lying in bed and thinking 'Dammit, need to sleep! go to sleep, go to sleep'. I'm just hoping that with enough practice I'll eventually stop tensing up.

Sorry to hear about the job slidey. Hopefully something soon will crop up

Definitely something I'm trying to stop, so hopefully that job will pop up soon for more judo. Though on the other hand, I've had the luxury of well-paid part-time work up until this year, so will have to rejig my working practice to fit the PhD around full-time. May not leave enough time for judo.

Oh, and cheers for condolences. :D Hopefully should work out as being a positive, as I'll be able to move nearer to uni and gf, not to mention there are far worse things than losing your job.

If you're addressing me, then the style I practice is Brazilian jiu jitsu. See here if you're unfamiliar with it, and therefore might be looking for a basic explanation.

For me, Martial art is very important, not just only for self defense, also for our health. It's a good form of exercise. :P

Yeah, exercise is much more important to me than self defence. Main reason I train is fun.

Hate to break it to you Slidey, but you're chatting to a spam-bot. Well, you were. Now that I've deleted it you're just chatting to yourself :P
